SONOGRAMA is an experimental sound festival hosted at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design of Central America and the Caribbean (MADC) in San José, Costa Rica. Conceived as a sensitive capture of the pulse of experimental music and sound practices in their local diversity, the festival proposed an immersion across a wide spectrum of auditory experiences — from ambient and meditative music to sound architecture and noise — staged within the industrial architecture of La Pila de la Melaza and El Tanque, two spaces transformed into alternative performance venues resonating with the ambient sounds of the city.
This was the inaugural edition of SONOGRAMA, and I had the privilege of serving as co-curator alongside Sofía Villena, Chief Curator of the MADC, as well as art director of the festival. In these roles, I contributed to the conceptual development of the festival and led a significant body of work across communications strategy and on-site design applications.
The curatorial vision behind SONOGRAMA was one of openness and critical attention to the present. Rather than imposing a fixed theme, the festival was conceived as a snapshot of contemporary Costa Rican sound culture — one where sound functions as political, ecological, and cultural material, tracing a sensitive map of a country in motion, traversed by contradictions and contested imaginaries. The participating artists — many presenting their work at the MADC for the first time — brought together synthesizers, artist-built instruments, and classical or traditional instruments used in unconventional ways, giving the festival a strong dimension of innovation and experimentation.
